Programme Summary

This qualification is designed to:

 

* recognise readiness for further study in computing and related fields at higher diploma level or national degree level as well as for initial employment in the computer industry

* provide a first and second qualification for people who are pursuing a career in the computer industry, or related fields

 

People with this qualification have an introductory and general level of understanding about computer industry concepts and/or are able to work in areas of computing with the least and medium technical complexity, for example user support, personal computer repair, administration of systems, or installation and repair of multi-user systems or trainee programming.

 

The qualification has a flexible structure to allow for changing requirements in the computer industry, and to allow providers to create learning programmes with a predominantly computing component but tailored to meet the local or national needs of a wide range of industries.

 

The optional strand is Computer Support, with additional training and qualifications available in Microsoft Certification (MCSE,MCSA, MCITP) The qualification is designed to allow the credit achieved in the National Diploma in Computing (Level 5) to be used for cross credit to the National Diploma in Computing (Level 6)


 

People with this qualification have:

an introductory and general level of understanding about computer industry concepts and/or are able to

work in areas of computing with low to medium technical complexity, for example user support,

personal computer repair, administration of systems, installation and repair of multi-user systems or

trainee programming.

Length of Study

16 weeks per semester, 2 semesters per level (ie, 4 semesters for both level 5 and 6, 15 months to complete both)

 

Entry Requirements

 

Entry to the course is open to domestic students and to international students who hold the relevant visas from the New Zealand immigration service. For entry at level 5 and 6 international students must have a level of English equivalent to TOEFL 500 or IELTS Band 6.0 or a pass in the provider entry test.

• ethics & professionalism for the computer industry in New Zealand

• emerging computerised business information systems
• data storage on computers and computer database management systems and design
• presentation of information to an audience

St George Institute of Learning – Year 2 (Level 7)

• computer architecture concepts
• multi-user computer systems, assembly and installation
• multi-user computer operating systems and application software
• local area computer network installation
• networked computer application software installation
• computer cabling for a multi-user computer system and control changes to a multi-user computer system
• computer network communication and local area computer network administration
